"Twenty years ago, a masterpiece of dark fantasy took root in our collective imagination... Guillermo del Toro’s haunting vision, Pan's Labyrinth."
"To mark two decades since its cinematic release, Books Illustrated Ltd is proud to announce the definitive 20th Anniversary Edition.

This is not just a book—it is a passage back into the heart of the labyrinth."
The Story: How it became a book
"Written by the celebrated storyteller, Cornelia Funke, and brought to life by the breath-taking illustrations of Tom Roberts. Our edition captures the terror, the tragedy, and the enduring magic of Ofelia's journey."

Around 2018, del Toro reached out to Funke to propose a collaboration on a novel version of Pan’s Labyrinth. Rather than merely adapting the screenplay, he wanted the book to expand and enrich the story’s mythology—something Funke excels at.

Del Toro and Funke worked closely together. With Del Toro providing input, background lore, and the film’s narrative framework, Funke wrote the actual prose and added ten original fairy tales woven into the story—deepening the world and giving it the feeling of a timeless myth. This was first published in 2019.

The book is not a word-for-word adaptation but an expansion of the film’s story, with inner monologues, rich world-building, and new tales that give more emotional resonance to Ofelia’s journey. It captures the visual intensity of the movie while offering literary depth through Funke’s poetic style and del Toro’s haunting vision.
