Mythical Beasts

Some mythical creatures have their origin in traditional mythology and have been believed to be real creatures, for example the dragon, the unicorn, and griffin. Others were based on real encounters, originating in garbled accounts of travelers' tales.

Mythical Beasts

Griffin (or Gryphon) - The griffin has the body of a lion with the head and wings of an eagle. It was thought to be a particularly strong creature as the lion is the king of beasts and the eagle is the king of birds

Phoenix - The phoenix is a bird that dies in fire and is reborn. It is normally portrayed as having gold and red feathers. At the end of its life, a phoenix is said to build a nest of cinnamon twigs which it then ignites. The bird is destroyed in the fire but a new young phoenix is born from the same fire.

Unicorn - A horse with a long single horn on its head

Satyr - Satyrs are half men half goats - the upper body being that of the man and the lower half of a goat.

Cyclops - A race of giants with a single eye in the middle of its forehead

Banshee - The banshee is from Irish mythology and usually seen as female spirits.

Giant - Giants are monsters of great strength and size in human form.

Basilisk - The basilisk had the head and legs of a cock, tail of a snake, and a body like a bird. It seems that the wings could be depicted as either being covered with feathers or scales.

Centaur -  Upper body of a human on the body of a horse.

Cerberus – Creature with multiple heads. The centre head was that of a lion while the other two were that of a dog and a wolf. He also had a dragon's tail and a thick mane of writhing snakes.

Chimera - A fire-breathing creature that has the body of a goat, the head of a lion and the tail of a serpent.

The Harpies, Furies, ErinyesKeresFates  and Graes - Hords of female monsters often associated with death that bring ordeals on the human race.

Hydra - A huge serpent with nine heads

Kraken - A giant sea monster. 

Gorgon and Medusa – Female creature whose gaze can turn men to stone.

Minotaur - The head of a bull and the body of a man or, conversely, with the body of a bull and the head of a man.

Pegasus - Winged white horse from the blood of the Gorgon Medusa when the hero Perseus beheaded her.

Roc - A bird of enormous size, bulky body and wide wings.

Salamander – A Lizard like creature resistant to fire. Believed to live in volcanoes.

Scylla - A monster with six arms, six heads with four eyes each

Sirens or Mermaids – Creature with a female human head and torso and the tail of a fish.

Sphinx - There are three types of sphinx:

              The androsphinx, the typical lion with a human face/head

              The criosphinx, a ram-headed lion.

              The hierocosphonx has the body of a lion and the head of a hawk.

Titans - Gods of enormous size and incredible strength.
