One of the great classics of English literature is Kenneth Grahame’s
‘The Wind in the Willows.’
The book was first published by Methuen in 1908. Books Illustrated will be celebrated the centenary of this masterpiece by putting together an exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, LAPADA fair which was held in May, 2008. Charles van Sandwyk delivered a detailed and humerous lecture on the art of this classic tale.
Books Illustrated is planning other special events regarding Toad and his friends throughout 2008.
When published, the success of the book enabled Grahame to finish his then career at a bank. It has been reissued many times since its first publication and has been illustrated by some of our greatest illustrators. The first issue only had a frontispiece illustration by Graham Robertson. The 1927 edition was beautifully illustrated by EH Shepard and is a copy loved by many. Arthur Rackham completed his illustrations just before he passed away, but never got to see the final published book which was published in 1940.
Charles van Sandwyk from Canada, produced another great edition for the Folio Society 2006.
