Raymond Briggs studied painting at Wimbledon School of Art and went on to the Slade School of Art. He was soon winning acclaim as a children’s book illustrator and taught illustration at Brighton College of Art. He has won the Kate Greenaway Medal twice. His characterisation of his Father Christmas is based on his father.
