The Wonder of Illustration
including
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland -
This year, and for the first time, Books Illustrated is exhibiting at the Salisbury Museum from 4 April to 4 July. ‘The Wonder of Illustration’ features original artwork by Angel Dominguez, a contemporary illustrator who is constantly busy both in his native country of Spain and the UK and American markets. His most lavish project was Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, published by Artisan in 1996. Many of the original illustrations for this book will be available to purchase at ‘The Wonder of Illustration’ exhibition.
Lewis Carroll wrote ‘Alice’s Adventures Under Ground’, tales inspired by his friendship with the young Alice Liddell. This was published in 1865 under the title of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland with illustrations by John Tenniel. Many illustrators have created their own interpretations of the story, including Mabel Lucie Attwell, Willy Pogany and Arthur Rackham, the grand master of illustration.
The work of the illustrator is a highly developed skill as they are responsible for telling a new or classic tale through a visual medium. These illustrations inspire the imagination of children and adults alike and add colour and texture to a story. In the twenty-first century this work is, more often, digitally executed so the traditional skill of artwork on paper is becoming rarer; only the finest illustrators are now commissioned as publishers vie for market share.
Books Illustrated is a leading specialist in the fine art of published illustrators and has been actively developing this niche market for the last 10 years. Based in Salisbury, they exhibit original works at premium fairs around the country and see over 350,000 art and antique collectors every year.
Angel Dominguez lives in the Basque region of Spain and has illustrated many books around wildlife and children’s stories. He combined his love of Britain with his love of nature in his first children’s book, Diary of a Victorian Mouse. A professional artist since 1971, he is also a keen collector of rare children’s books, particularly those of Arthur Rackham.
An accomplished and versatile illustrator, he is currently busy with new projects in various stages of production.
Books illustrated include: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Anaconda y Otros Cuentos de La Selva, Animal Adventure Mazes, Diary of a Victorian Mouse, Journey to Freedom, The King's Gift - with Queen Rania of Jordan, Twelve Days of Christmas, and many more. |
