Edward Julius Detmold

Born in London, and tutored by his uncle who encouraged Detmold’s artistic talent. Together with his twin brother, Detmold first exhibited at the young age of thirteen at the Royal Academy and issued a portfolio of etchings in 1898. By the age of twenty, the brothers had produced another portfolio of watercolours, based on Kipling’s Jungle Book. In 1908 his brother committed suicide and it was not until 1910 that the next Detmold print was published. Much of his work, but not all, is centred on animals and many were used as book illustrations.
